You won’t get rich writing short stories, however, there is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to pay a bill or two.

If you write short literary or genre fiction there is a magazine or website just waiting to publish your work.

Since I don’t believe in writing for free, I’ve compiled a list of publications that will pay at least $50 for your submissions.

Find the publications that are best for your short stories and start submitting your work.

1. One Story

Submission Guidelines
Pay: $500 + 25 Contributor copies
One story accepts literary fiction only and stories have to be between 3000 and 8000 words. There are no restrictions on style and subject. Ultimately they are looking for “… stories that leave readers feeling satisfied and are strong enough to stand alone.”

2. The Three Penny Review

Submission Guidelines
Pay: $400 for short stories
The Three Penny Review is a quarterly art house magazine that focuses on art, theatre, culture, memoir, essays…
