TV Show Review | Raising Dion (2019)

A fun but flawed superhero origin story great for kids and parents alike.

Produced by Michael B. Jordan and based on the comic by Dennis Liu, Raising Dion tells the story of Dion, a young boy who discovers he has superpowers to the awe and horror of his recently widowed mother.

Dion played by newcomer Ja’Siah Young is a typical seven-year-old boy. He likes playing video games, is struggling to fit into a new school, loves his mom and is trying to hold on to the memory of his father Mark, played by Michael B. Jordan in flashbacks, who passed sometime before the series begins.

One morning, while eating his bowl of fruit loops, he discovers that he can do “magic,” and tries to explain his newfound skills to his harried mother Nicole Reese (Alisha Wainwright) to no avail. It’s obviously not a secret that Dion can keep for long, and once his mother finds out, the real action begins.

Raising Dion is at its best when the focus is on the children and not the adults in the show. While it’s called Raising
